How do I perform a Factory Reset?

There are three levels for resetting the NRS processor when the unit is not responding to commands or if changes within the SETUP MENU cause the video to become unstable or no video image:

  • Level 1: Cycle power to the NRS on/off
  • Level 2: Unplug the NRS unit and then reconnect power. The unit will re-initialize and then be ready for operation. No settings or stored presets are altered.
  • Level 3: Complete Firmware Restore. The following steps will erase all settings, returning the NRS unit to the original FACTORY SETTINGS.
This procedure should only be used if the NRS unit is not responding or the video signal has been lost during installation setup. This procedure will return the NRS to its original factory settings.

You will be required to reset specific settings within the NRS SETUP MENU required by the Display Device (i.e.: Widescreen, for 16x9 displays, Wide 4:3 for 4:3 displays utilizing a 16:9 aspect screen, information stored in the USER PRESETS or activate the HD/COMPUTER input Transcoder, etc.).

  • Remove Power Cable from NR Series unit
  • Press, and hold, the FACTORY button
  • Re-Connect Power Cable to NR Series unit
  • Front LCD panel will indicate LOADING FACTORY
  • Release FACTORY button
  • After FACTORY initialization, unit will return to Standby (LED turns Red; STAND-BY)

Can I connect an HDTV or Progressive Format DVD signal to the Component (YCrCb) input?

No. Do not connect.

The Component (YCrCb) input will ONLY accept an NTSC, 480i (15.75KHz) video input signal.

HDTV (720p or 1080i) and Progressive Format DVD (480p) signals may only be connected via the HD/COMPUTER 15-pin Male VGA input connection.

Progressive Format DVD players should be switched over to an Interlaced Format, and then connected to the Component YCrCb input of the NRS. This allows the NRS to utilize onboard DCDi technology, while also enabling advanced video processing, and then re-scaling the image to the Display Device’s NATIVE RATE. This will produce a superior image result.


How do I connect an HDTV input source to the NRS?

There are two (2) possible connections that can be made via the VGA HD/COMPUTER input; they are dependent upon your connection to the display device.

RGBh/v connection via VGA (male) to VGA (female) cable. When using this connection, leave the HDTV External Input (Page 6) set to Pass-thru (Default).

Component (YPrPb) to VGA (female) cable. When using this connection, you must first set the HDTV External Input (Page 6) to YPrPb to RGB (HDTV input will then be converted to RGBh/v) then, select the Transcoder mode HDTV EXT. FORMAT (typically 1080i). The display device must be connected via 5-wire BNC cable.


How do I set up the HD/COMPUTER VGA input HD Pass-thru (Page 6)?

Component (YPrPb)

When connecting the Component (YPrPb) output of an HDTV source (Satellite, Cable or D-VHS), connect an RCA to VGA Breakout cable (RCA to 15-pin, female, VGA cable) to the HD/COMPUTER input of the NRS unit. Do NOT connect the HDTV Component output to the NTSC Component YCrCb input of the NRS. This connection is only intended for 480i Component NTSC sources. The YPrPb to VGA connection should be made using GREEN for Y, RED for Pr and BLUE for Pb.

Once cable connection is achieved, if you are connecting to the 3-wire Component Input of the Display Device, leave the NRS set to PASS-THRU. This connection ONLY applies to 480p, 540p and 720p NRS scan rates. All other NRS scan rates are Computer scan rates; the Display Device will NOT process/understand Computer scan rates connected to the Component Input.

Note: The 540p (1920x540 progressive) format has the same 33.714KHz scan rate frequency as the interlaced scan rate of 1080i. The Display Device will recognize the 540p scan rate as 1080i.

If your connection from the NRS unit to the Display Device is RGBh/v, via the 5-wire BNC or VGA Monitor output terminal, you must first turn on the Transcoder to convert the YPrPb signal to RGBh/v or your picture will appear GREEN. From the front panel buttons on the NRS:
  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays SYSTEM SETTINGS. PRESS ENTER KEY
  • LCD panel will display SYSTEM MENU. PRESS ENTER KEY
  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays HDTV EXTERNAL INPUT
  • Select VALUE UP button until LCD panel displays YPrPb to RBG (DO NOT select ENTER)
  • Select FUNCTION DOWN button until LCD panel displays HDTV EXTERNAL FORMAT
  • Select VALUE UP button until LCD panel displays 1080i (DO NOT select ENTER)
  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays SAVE TO ALL; press ENTER
  • Select ENTER button two additional times to return to the USER MENU
Once this setting has been made, all Component (YPrPb) video sources are converted to RGBh/v.

Satellite/Cable/D-VHS VGA (RGBh/v) or RCA (RGBh/v) connection

When connecting a 15-pin VGA (RGBh/v) or RCA/BNC (RGBh/v) HDTV source (Satellite, Cable or D-VHS) to the 15-pin VGA HD/COMPUTER input, leave the NRS unit in PASS-THRU.

Computer (PC)
  • All computer input connections are RGBh/v
  • Connect output of PC to the HD/COMPUTER VGA input
  • Insure that the HD/COMPUTER input is set to PASS-THRU. You will require a separate connection to the Display Device if your primary NRS Video Connection is YPrPb. You will also be required to switch the input selection on the Display Device that corresponds to the Computer/PC connection from the NRS for this separate PC connection.

Where can I find the RS-232 Command Codes?

Installation and Operations Manual
  • RS-232 command protocol is found on Page 10, APPENDIX A, of your manual. This manual is available from this website for download.
Computer Control (PC)

  • Use a communications program; for example, Windows HyperTerminal.
  • Once connection is established, TYPE: nrs,help and then the [Enter] key.
  • [Enter] denotes a Carriage Return keyboard entry.
  • Connection settings are as follows using a standard 9-pin communications cable (null-modem NOT required):
  • Bits per second: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None

How do I enter the RS-232 Command String Header?

Following the header, a comma is used to delimit the Header from the Command. The following are examples using the Power On function with respective carriage returns:
  • nrs,on[Enter]: PC
  • nrs,on\r: Crestron
  • nrs,on13: AMX
  • nrs,on0d: Hexadecimal

How do I program the IR Commands?

IR commands are found on Page 11, IR REMOTE TEACHING FUNCTIONS, of your manual. Follow the instructions within the first paragraph for programming your learning remote from the IR Table listed.

  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays IR SETUP MENU. PRESS ENTER KEY
  • LCD panel will display POWER ON
  • Select VALUE UP/DOWN button to scroll thru the separate commands listed in the IR Table (Page 11)
  • Once you have scrolled to the command you wish to program, press ENTER button
  • The NRS will emit the IR command from the front panel IR receiver window
Once learning remote programming is complete:

  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays EXIT SYSTEM SETTINGS; press ENTER
  • Select ENTER button two additional times to return to the USER MENU
Note: POWER ON and POWER OFF commands listed in the NRS teaching menu are the same command and are NOT discrete commands.


How do I program discrete Power On and Power Off via IR?

The NRS has the ability to teach a learning remote command codes via the IR Setup Menu. The NRS will emit these codes, via the front IR receiver window, each time the ENTER button is pressed for the specific command displayed on the blue LCD panel.

Note: The IR commands displayed on the LCD panel for POWER ON and POWER OFF are not discrete codes as the NRS manual would intimate. Both commands are the same command; they are merely a toggle switch IR command code, as if you had depressed the POWER button on the provided NRS remote.

You must first teach your learning remote TWO (2) separate IR commands via the NRS unit IR window. Refer to IR REMOTE TEACHING FUNCTIONS (Page 11) within the NR Series manual.

First, program the IR command for POWER ON or POWER OFF. Second, the IR commands for numbers 1 and 0. Once the IR commands have been learned, program the learning remote to perform the following macro sequence within 250-milliseconds (.25 seconds) for each individual command:

  • IR command POWER ON or POWER OFF, then IR command 1 = POWER ON
  • IR command POWER ON or POWER OFF, then IR command 0 = POWER OFF

How do I change Inputs via IR?

You must first teach the learning remote SIX (6) separate IR commands via the NRS unit IR window. Refer to IR REMOTE TEACHING FUNCTIONS (Page 11) within the NR Series manual.

First, program the IR command for INPUT. Second, the IR commands for numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Once the IR commands have been learned, program the learning remote to perform the following macro sequence with a 250-millisecond delay (.25 seconds) for each individual command:

  • IR command INPUT, then 1 = COMPOSITE
  • IR command INPUT, then 2 = S-VIDEO
  • IR command INPUT, then 3 = YPrPb (YCrCb)
  • IR command INPUT, then 4 = RGB (This input is not selected for YPrPb or YCrCb formats)
  • IR command INPUT, then 5 = PASS-THRU
Note: NRS unit will immediately respond to the INPUT command and toggle sequentially to the next input. Unit will then respond to the corresponding input number.


How do I change Aspect via IR?

You must first teach the learning remote FOUR (4) separate IR commands via the NRS unit IR window. Refer to IR REMOTE TEACHING FUNCTIONS (Page 11) within the NR Series manual.

First, program the IR command for ASPECT. Second, the IR commands for numbers 1, 2, and 3. Once the IR commands have been learned, program the learning remote to perform the following macro sequence with a 250-millisecond delay (.25 second) for each individual command:

  • IR command ASPECT, then 1 = 4:3
  • IR command ASPECT, then 2 = LETTERBOX
  • IR command ASPECT, then 3 = ANAMORPHIC

There is “Dark Banding/Streaking” while the video image is changing; how do I fix this?

The video image is “Phased” (positioned) too far to the left and/or the video image is too wide. The Display Device is now “Clamping” to the Peak Whites of the Video Signal, rather than the Clamp Pulse (Sync Pulse). To correct this, you will need to recalibrate the Display Device. Do NOT use the NRS positioning controls to attempt compensation for this problem on the Master Input (usually Component YCrCb).

Each Display Device will have different nomenclature and controls to make this correction:

Digital Display Device (Plasma, LCD DLP or D-ILA)

  • Use a “Screen Area” setup pattern from a test DVD
  • Reduce the Image Size until you see the Active Picture area of both the left side and right side of the video image.
  • Center the Image on the Screen using the positioning controls of the Display Device only.
  • Digital Displays will an additional sizing control labeled Pixel Clock, Dot Clock or just Clock, etc. This adjustment will expand the image to towards the Right while the Left side of the image should remain relatively fixed (somewhat).
  • Use Horizontal Size, Positioning controls and Clock adjustment to center/position the image on screen. You will need to utilize all controls to achieve (massage) centering.
  • Once the image is centered correctly, fully expand the image to the edge of the screen.
CRT Display Device

  • Use a “Screen Area” setup pattern from a test DVD
  • Reduce the Image Size by 10% to 15%
  • Un-blank Left, Right, Top and Bottom Blanking
  • Increase BRIGHTNESS to 75%
  • Image should be clearly seen within the raster area.
  • Phase picture to center image within the raster area.
  • Center raster (with image) on the screen.
  • Blank Left, Right, Top and Bottom Blanking to edge of image.
  • Increase Left/Right and Top/Bottom Size to the edge of screen.

Which video Output Format should I use (NRS SETUP MENU)?

Three (3) Output Format selections are available from within the Setup Menu (Page 6). RGB (Default), YCrCb and YPrPb.

RGBh/v (Red, Green, Blue, horizontal sync and vertical sync) should always be the first choice to the Display Device if this input connection is available.

RGB (Default)
Use this connection when connecting the NRS output, BNC (RGBh/v) or 15-pin VGA MONITOR (RGBh/v) connection, to the Display Device’s corresponding BNC or RCA input connection. Many displays utilize one input for multiple format mediums; ensure that RGB or PC, not COMP (Component), is selected on the Display Device when this connection is established.

YCrCb (Component)
Do not use. This setting is for testing purposes only.

YPrPb (Component)
Use this connection when connecting the NRS output, BNC (YPrPb) output connection, to the Display Device’s corresponding Component (YPrPb) input connection. This output format should ONLY be selected for NRS scan rates of 480p, 540p or 720p and the Display Device does not have an available 5-wire RGBh/v or 15-pin VGA connection.


Which Output Connection should I use; MONITOR (VGA) out or BNC (RGBh/v) out?

MONITOR out should only be used with cable lengths of 12 feet or less. Lengths above 12 feet will reduce image quality causing video ringing and even a loss of signal. When a display device only provides a VGA-type (RGBh/v) input connection, and lengths of 12 feet or greater are required, a 5-BNC RGBh/v to VGA cable (VGA Break-out) should be used to achieve the image. Run RGBh/v connection from the NRS (BNC) and use VGA (15-pin connection) at the Display Device.

The 5-wire BNC (Default) output is always preferred; this connection can achieve lengths of 100 feet without the use of a video amplifier.

RGBh/v output to YPrPb input = MAGENTA Image

The DEFAULT OUTPUT FORMAT for the NRS is 5-wire RGB (RGBh/v). If you are connecting to the YPrPb input of the Display Device, you must first change the OUTPUT FORMAT to YPrPb within the SETUP MENU of the NRS. This output format should ONLY be selected for NRS scan rates of 480p, 540p or 720p and the Display Device does not have an available 5-wire RGBh/v or 15-pin VGA connection.

If you are connecting the NRS and display device via RGBh/v, and your picture is still MAGENTA, you will need to change the Display Device’s input format to RGB or PC, not COMP (Component).

OR

Verify that the output/input cable(s) have not been swapped.

YPrPb output to RGBh/v input = GREEN Image

You have connected the NRS RGBh/v or MONITOR output to the Display Device’s RGBh/v input, or VGA input, but have incorrectly set the OUTPUT FORMAT of the NRS to YPrPb or YCrCb.

OR

You have connected an HDTV Component (YPrPb) output format to the NRS HD/COMPUTER input. You are also connected from the NRS to the Display Device via RGBh/v out or MONITOR out. When this connection is made, you must turn on the on-board Transcoder to convert the HDTV YPrPb signal to RGBh/v. From the front panel of the NRS:

  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays SYSTEM SETTINGS. PRESS ENTER KEY
  • LCD panel will display SYSTEM MENU. PRESS ENTER KEY
  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays HDTV EXTERNAL INPUT
  • Select VALUE UP button until LCD panel displays YPrPb to RBG (DO NOT select ENTER)
  • Select FUNCTION DOWN button until LCD panel displays HDTV EXTERNAL FORMAT
  • Select VALUE UP button until LCD panel displays 1080i (DO NOT select ENTER)
  • Select FUNCTION UP button until LCD panel displays SAVE TO ALL; press ENTER
  • Select ENTER button two additional times to return to the USER MENU
OR

You have turned on Sync of Green in the NRS SETUP MENU.

OR

Verify that the output/input cable(s) has not been swapped.

OR

A defective cable termination.
