Meridian 501 Control Unit

The 501 Control Unit is a high-quality full-function analogue preamplifier for use with any traditional high-performance audio system. Often found alongside the Meridian 556 power amplifier, 501 provides a flexible front end for a superb sounding two-channel system.

The 501 Control Unit combines major advances in audio and engineering design. It is a high quality full-function preamplifier for use with high performance analogue sources. It provides six audio inputs, each of which can be individually adjusted for sensitivity, and identified on the four-character alphanumeric display. A high quality MC or MM phono stage is available as an option for the dedicated LP input.

Technical Specification

Distortion: Less than 0.01% input to output.

Signal/Noise: Less than –90dB for high-level analogue inputs. Less than –70dB for MM input. Less than –60dB for MC input.

MM option: Sensitivity adjustable 0.5–3mV for 5cm/s @ 1kHz. Overload point 47mV @ 1kHz. Cartridge load 47k ohms + 100 pF.

MC option: Sensitivity adjustable 38–210µV for 5cm/s @ 1kHz. Cartridge load 220 ohms + 10nF.

Inputs: 6 unbalanced on phono, 27–150mV (impedance 20k ohms).

Outputs: 2 unbalanced on phono, 1.4–3Vrms maximum.

Tape output: Unbalanced, 1.5V

Headphone: 2V maximum output

Comms: Two 5-pin 240° DIN sockets, RS232 interface.

Construction: Black textured enamel and glass finish.
