Introducing G65

Meridian’s G65 is the definitive new Digital Surround Controller of the G Series. In conjunction with the HD621 HDMI Processor, it unifies the diverse range of the latest audio and video sources with unified control over time alignment, bass management and surround sound processing. The latest in the G Series line of high performance components, G65 builds on the achievements of our flagship 800 Series, with entirely new circuitry developed specifically for the product.

Surround Heritage

20 years ago, in 1994, Meridian launched the 565, the world’s first Digital Surround Controller. Conceived as a multichannel music controller, 565 defined the surround category and rivalled the finest 2-channel products available.

In addition to establishing Meridian’s leadership in surround controllers, 565 set standards and introduced new concepts such as hardware and software upgradability. Indeed, virtually every feature introduced by Meridian in the 565 has set the standard in the industry. 565, combined with Meridian DSP Loudspeakers, represented the birth of the Meridian Digital Theatre, and launched Meridian into the world of multichannel audio and video. Like the MCD CD player, 565 was an iconic Meridian product that shaped not only its category but also the wider world of consumer audio.

Hand-Built in the UK

The creation of the different elements that make up a Meridian home entertainment system comprises a unique combination of traditional techniques with the latest manufacturing technology.

Alongside the most sophisticated surface-mount insertion machines at Meridian’s headquarters near Cambridge, a great many aspects of the building of a Meridian product are carried out by hand, from determining the exact position of components on the board onwards. Some components cannot be fitted by machine: they may be too bulky or require precision alignment, or need installation with special care. In some cases, components are inserted on to the board by hand and wave-soldered. On other occasions, both insertion and soldering are carried out manually.

G65 Technologies

As the heart of a sophisticated Meridian Digital Theatre, G65 is a nexus for Meridian’s world-leading audio technologies. Designed to drive Meridian DSP Loudspeakers as well as providing balanced analogue outputs for conventional systems, G65 offers a single multichannel cable connection to the HD621, and SpeakerLink controls for Enhanced Bass Alignment, Centre Elevation, Bass, Tilt, Axis and Source Legend. Meridian’s unique Apodising upsampling system audibly improves audio quality and can even correct problems in an original digital recording. The listening room is part of the equation, thanks to Meridian Room Correction, smoothing out the low-frequency reverberation in a room to relieve muddiness and improve clarity and imaging.

Form & Function

Inspired by the flagship 861 processor, Meridian’s G65 features a card-based construction utilising 7-layer boards. This architecture makes it possible to build cards that handle specific audio tasks, rather than the large, multifunction boards common in much audio equipment, where the operations carried may not be complementary, and which can introduce problems like long tracks that can act as antennae for noise and interference.

The position of every part on a board affects its neighbour – ultimately impacting sound and picture quality. Part of the “Meridian Sound” results from the fact that co-founder Bob Stuart hand-tunes each card for maximum performance – and you can read his initials on every board.

The Journey to the G65

1994

The 500 Series and the 565

The Meridian 500 Series, introduced in 1993, was a unique system of digital, analogue, and video components designed to meet the demand for absolute quality, ease of use, and lasting value. It was Meridian’s classic line of products for a decade. From its introduction in July 1994, the Meridian 565 became widely recognized as the benchmark surround processor.

Proprietary Meridian DSP redefined expectations for movie sound and created a paradigm shift for music listening by enabling immeasurably improved stereo with 3- to 8-speaker systems. The 565, combined with Meridian’s digital active loudspeakers, formed the first Meridian Digital Theatre – the ultimate platform for movie sound reproduction. The Digital Theatre and the 565 won a dozen major awards in as many months.

Meridian 800 Reference Series

The success of the 565 was followed in 1997 by the release of Meridian’s flagship line, the 800 Reference Series. The 800 Series was designed to address the problem of rapid format development and the constant need for product replacement.

Card-based and modular, so reducing the chance of the product becoming obsolete, the 800 Series today represents Meridian’s top of the line products: beautifully-built and offering the highest levels of performance. Today the award-winning 861 Reference Surround Controller is recognized as a world leader in home theatre technology.

Meridian G Series

In September 2003, Meridian Audio released a completely new line of products – the first in ten years and the seventh series of products in the history of the company. Designed with the objective of increasing the number of combination products, thanks to a larger enclosure size, the initial dozen products included the G68 surround processor, and all were packaged in stylish new enclosures

– an entire range of analogue and digital systems, and ideal companions either for Meridian DSP loudspeakers or conventional passive configurations.

Meridian Digital Theatre

Combining Meridian’s Digital Surround Processor and Digital Active Loudspeakers, the Meridian Digital Theatre has set award-winning standards in movie sound and multichannel music for almost 20 years.

The Meridian G65 surround-sound controller carries on the tradition, in concert with Meridian DSP Loudspeakers and the HD621 HDMI processor, which separates HDMI audio and video for higher quality of both.

At the Surround Controller the source processed to feed the correct loudspeakers with pristine digital sound. Tuned to perfection with Meridian Room Correction to match the acoustic environment, digital signals are fed to the loudspeakers with their built-in precision digital signal processing, driving carefully matched amplifiers and drivers, all coming together in perfect harmony.

The Meridian Digital Theatre delivers an enveloping, immersive experience that is unmatched in the industry, with a degree of clarity and authenticity of performance that has to be experienced to be believed, and remains as close as possible the producers’ and artists’ intentions.

Meridian DSP Loudspeakers

Today, all Meridian’s loudspeakers are based on the same principles that went into the loudspeakers for the first Meridian Digital Theatre back in the mid-90s.

The cabinet contains more than the loudspeaker drivers: it also contains powerful amplifiers, precision high-resolution digital-to-analogue converters, and sophisticated DSP (Digital Signal Processing) that divides the incoming digital signals into individual frequency bands with a degree of precision impossible with traditional analogue designs.

The result is a loudspeaker system that is more efficient than traditional designs. It’s also capable of vastly improved performance, and crystal clarity. You simply hear more. And if you hear more, you feel more.
