Meridian Horizon is an upmixing technology that provides immersive multichannel audio from two channel stereo content, configured for any loudspeaker layout.

Originally developed within Meridian’s luxury home audio programme to generate multichannel audio from traditional two-channel stereo, Horizon has evolved into a flexible framework that intelligently adapts playback behaviour based on the input format. It analyses the incoming signal and manages how the system responds, ensuring that volume, balance and tonal behaviour remain predictable and natural whether the source is stereo, multichannel or Dolby Atmos.

Horizon For Dolby Atmos

Meridian has worked closely with Dolby engineers to ensure that Dolby Atmos performs seamlessly and predictably inside the vehicle. Horizon manages the playback of Dolby Atmos content alongside other formats within a coordinated processing framework, helping to maintain a consistent listening experience and common user behaviour. This collaboration ensures that the Horizon user controls work consistently across all content types, giving listeners a seamless transition between stereo, multichannel and immersive formats, with the power to personalise their listening experience.

CHALLENGE

When listening to two-channel stereo recordings the "sweet-spot" where accurate imaging is experienced is very small and if the listener is even slightly off-axis the imaging breaks down. Furthermore, the majority of music is still produced as two-channel stereo, whilst increasingly, systems will have surround or height channels.

SOLUTION

Meridian Horizon upmixes two-channel stereo to any loudspeaker configuration. Its adaptive upmixing treats high and low frequencies separately, to psychoacoustically optimize sound localization cues. Furthermore, control of the upmixing can be given to the end user allowing control over where they would like the central image and how much ambient content they would like.

RESULT

Meridian Horizon results in more stable imaging, with a larger sweet-spot, and can create a more immersive listening experience in systems with surround or height speakers.

Horizon For Lifestyle Audio

Horizon was deployed within premium LG sound bars, upmixing 2-channel content to present a consistent soundstage, regardless of seating position.
