If a transducer is driven beyond its capabilities, then this gives rise to excessive distortion and can result in mechanical failure. Therefore, limiters are utilised to ensure that the level of audio sent to the transducer is not too high. However, standard limiters can introduce colouration and audible artefacts.

Challenge

At higher listening levels, the dynamic nature of musical programme material can push transducers beyond their capabilities. This gives rise to excessive distortion on playback, induced through mechanical and electrical overloading of drive units, culminating in poor sound quality and premature transducer failure.

Solution

Through real-time analysis of incoming audio content, Meridian Pro-Tec predicts when the signal will exceed appropriate levels, and applies discrete dynamic adjustments to limit the output level whilst maintaining high-quality, transparent reproduction. If necessary, Pro-Tec divides the audio content into multiple frequency bands prior to analysis, in order to provide more refined control and minimise impact on spectral balance whilst maximising output level.
